Why Great REALTORS Keep Studying Negotiation

Why Great REALTORS Keep Studying Negotiation

2 min read

This week I’ve been updating my Accredited Real Estate sations change. You hear things you might once have missed. You become curious about statements you might once have challenged.

I keep seeing more in this material because I keep returning to it, and because of the situations you bring to me. That has helped me understand something I see in the best REALTORS I know. They keep studying, even when they are already very good at their work.

Janet Rathbun is one of those people.

Janet is a founding partner of Advantage Home Team in Delta, BC. She began her career in 2004, and more than 90% of the team’s business comes from repeat clients and referrals. She has built the kind of business many agents aspire to.

And she keeps learning.

I’ve worked with Janet through courses and coaching, including leadership development for her role on her team. What stands out is how deeply she cares about the people who depend on her: her clients, and the people whose working lives she helps shape.

That care shows up in the effort. Going further with pricing research so her advice rests on solid ground. Returning to a reliable process when things get complicated. Digging deeper into a client’s needs, even when experience says she already knows what is happening.

It takes discipline to stay curious after twenty years. Experience lets you recognize patterns quickly. It also makes it easy to assume you know what comes next.

Two sellers might insist on the same unrealistic price for entirely different reasons. The research may be similar. The conversations they need from you could be very different.

This is where studying negotiation keeps paying off. You revisit a principle with another year of experience behind you, and you see something new. A client you could have understood better. A conversation you could have handled differently. A question you now know to ask.

For clients, the value is practical. It is the care taken before recommending a price. The question that brings an unspoken concern into the open. The patience to help them think through a hard choice without rushing or pressuring them.

People trust us with decisions that affect their financial security, their families and what comes next in their lives. That is why this work deserves study. And it is why the work you do matters so much.

Working with Janet reminds me how closely care and ambition are connected. She wants to be excellent because she understands how much it matters to other people. I see that same care in so many of you.It is the same reason I keep learning, and I suspect it is yours too. It is why, after teaching AREN hundreds of times, I still find myself preparing a section and thinking about how much it can change when we put it into practice.
